A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Nov. 27-Dec. 3:

Last year on Nov. 30, 2021: The Presentation College men’s basketball team had a November to remember. Along with a six-game winning streak earlier in the month, the Saints played at SDSU (99-62 loss on Nov. 18); at USD (99-58 loss on Nov. 23); at NSU (83-47 loss on Nov. 27); and at UND (72-55 loss on Nov. 30).

10 years ago on Dec. 2, 2012: Two South Dakotans won titles at the 2012 Winter Airgun Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo. Former Olympian Brian Beaman of Selby won the men’s 10-meter air pistol and Dempster Christianson of Sioux Falls won the men’s air rifle.

20 years ago on Nov. 30, 2002: Carole Gilbertson become only the sixth South Dakota woman in history, and second Rapid Citian this year, to bowl a three-game 800 series. She rolled games of 300, 232 and 269 for an 801 series. Earlier this year on Jan. 31, Aberdeen native Debby Slusser of Rapid City set the women’s state record by rolling an 835.

30 years ago on Nov. 30, 1992: St. Thomas More opens its boys’ basketball season with practice under head coach Steve Miller. And the name of its assistant coach? Steve Miller (different person).

40 years ago on Nov. 27, 1982: The University of Alberta men’s basketball team led Northern State 64-63 with seven minutes left in the game. However, the Canadians then sent the Wolves to the free throw line four times in 90 seconds and NSU emerged with a seven-point lead and eventually an 84-75 win. Kevin King scored 22 and Todd Jordre 15 for the winners.

50 years ago on Nov. 28, 1972: Hecla nipped Frederick 51-50 in overtime. Lynn Ruenz scored 20 for Hecla and Dean Marske 18 for Frederick. Ruenz made the game-winning free throw for Hecla at the end of overtime and Frederick’s John Hieb sent the game into overtime with his basket in the last 10 seconds of regulation.
