Madison clips Deuel in gymnastics opener

CLEAR LAKE - Madison slipped past Deuel by slightly more than a point in a season-opening dual between the traditional Class A powers Tuesday night. Makia Moe of Deuel won the vault and bars on the way to earning all-around honors. Madison's Karlie Nelson won the beam and floor, and finished second in all-around. Madison edged Deuel by less than a point to win the state championship last season, snapping Deuel's four-year run as state champion. The last time either Madison or Deuel did not win a state title was 1994. Madison has won 21 state championships since then, including 16 in a row. Deuel has won seven state titles in that span.
