RAPID CITY – Aberdeen Central captured five places during the final day of the Rapid City Invitational on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles had three place winners on the boys’ side and two on the girls’ side.
“I think it was a good effort by those place winners, and then we had a good effort by those that fell a little bit short. There were some situations that didn’t go our way,” said Central coach Donnie Bowden. “But the ones that did place, they found ways to get into their situations and capitalize on those.”
Mason Schrempp led Central with a runner-up finish at 145 pounds, losing to defending state champion Moses Gross of Huron in the title match.
“Mason making the final was good,” Bowden said. “He beat some really solid guys along the way.”
Rayden Zens finished third at 126.
“Rayden wrestled really well,” Bowden said. “He ran into a really tough kid from Wyoming.”
Tate Huff was fourth at 132 pounds.
“Tate Huff was really dominant all the way up until to the semifinals where we came up a little short in the semifinals and in his third and fourth place match,” Bowden said. “He had a really good tournament and a really good weekend.”
On the girls’ side Madyson Gillen finished fourth after running into some tough out-of-state competition.
“Madyson was pretty dominant all the way up until the semifinals when we ran into a hammer in that Bismarck girl,” Bowden said. “And then we came back through and got ourselves into the third place match and ran into another tough girl there where we came up a little bit short, but she made some pretty good improvements and beat some really solid girls this weekend.”
Katrina Gibson finished seventh for the Golden Eagles.

“She wrestled well, too,” Bowden said. “Every time she gets out there she gets a little bit better.”
The action concluded a challenging three days of action for Central, which heads to Pierre for a dual on Tuesday.
“This is one my favorite weekends of the whole wrestling season to come out and see this kind of competition and get some more experience underneath our belts,” Bowden said. “I think it was definitely a success. I think we left here on a positive note and I think we left here with a lot of hungry kids who are ready to get back out on the mat come Tuesday.”
