The Aberdeen Cougars scored eight unanswered goals and rolled past Wahpeton-Breckenridge 9-3 in a non-league girls’ hockey contest Tuesday night at the Odde Ice Center.

Aberdeen scored twice in the opening period and then poured it on with five more goals in the second to take total control.

“I thought we came out and played a good first two periods of hockey,” said Cougars coach Rob Weinmeister.

Kailyn Poppen, Alli Stoltenburg, and Ema Rehder each scored twice in the victory. Rehder also had a pair of assists and Poppen had one. Alyssa Roehrich, Aiden Raap and Rachel Siefken also found the pack of the net for the Cougars.

Wahpeton-Breckenridge ended up scoring three third-period goals.

“In the third, I think because there was some good competitive contact, we were getting a little tired,” Weinmeister said. “It was a high-speed and physical game that I thought actually took a lot out of us. Our shifts were getting too long which caused some poor decisions and positioning. And because of those, we took way too many penalties and gave up the scoring opportunities they got in the third.”

The Cougars scored their nine goals on 29 shots in the contest.

Chloe Vikander had 24 saves in goal for Aberdeen.
