HURON – The Aberdeen Cougars erupted for five first-period goals and rolled to a 7-1 girls’ hockey victory over the Huron All-Stars Friday night.
Aberdeen received goals from five different players during the barrage, which included three goals in the first five and a half minutes of action.
Kailyn Poppen started the scoring less than two minutes into the contest. Rachel Siefken and Aiden Raap then added goals about two minutes apart. The Cougars capped the period with goals from Sydney Hofer and Ema Rehder.
The two teams traded second-period goals with Alyssa Roehrich scoring for the Cougars.
Rehder scored her second goal of the game in the third period for the final margin of difference.
The Cougars outshot Huron 32-6. That total included 17 shots in the opening period.
“We played a decent first period. We were getting some good looks and moving the puck around. We had time and space to do things,” said Cougars coach Rob Weinmeister. “Unfortunately, we talked about consistency, and the second and third were not the same level of play that I expect.”
Weinmeister would like to see more of a sustained effort like the players had this past Monday, despite a loss to Jamestown, N.D.
“These ladies are capable of playing solid 51 minutes and we saw that Monday,” Weinmeister said. “This is something we can continue to work to improve.”
The Cougars, 3-1 on the season, will host Sioux Falls this afternoon. Puck drop is set for 2 p.m. at the Odde Ice Center.
