RAPID CITY – Aberdeen Central split a pair of non-conference wrestling duals Thursday night to begin three days of competition in Rapid City.
The Golden Eagles defeated Rapid City Central 61-15, before falling to Sturgis 43-20.
“It started out really well when we started out there with Central,” said Golden Eagles coach Donnie Bowden. “We kind of got on a roll, picked up a lot of wins, we picked up a lot of bonus-point wins, so it was good to see that. Kids were constantly scoring more points.”
Things were a bit different against the Scoopers.
“When we got in to Sturgis we knew we were going to have a fight on our hands,” Bowden said. “The kids went in there and they fought and showed some effort, and ultimately they took nine matches, we took five, but there was a couple of others that came right down to the wire. It was a lot closer than the score showed.”
Tate Huff, Rayden Zens, Mason Schrempp, Logan Opitz, and Jacob Krenz each won a pair of matches on the night for Central.
The Golden Eagles will now compete in a 48-team tourney today and tomorrow featuring wrestlers from four different states.
“It was a good start to the weekend,” Bowden said of Thursday’s duals, “and we’re hoping for better (Friday).”
