A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Dec. 4-10:

Last year on Dec. 5, 2021: Minnesota Twin teammates Tony Oliva and Jim Kaat were elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame and will be inducted July 24. Both men are 83. Oliva played 15 MLB seasons (1962-76), all with the Twins, was a .304 career hitter and was a three-time American League batting champion. Kaat was a left-handed pitcher for 25 seasons (1959-1983) — 15 with the Twins, and he won 283 games (190 with Twins) with an earned-run average of 3.45 with 2,461 strikeouts. Oliva has been married to Gordette (DuBois) of Hitchcock for 54 years. They were married Jan. 6, 1968, in the United Methodist Church in Hitchcock.

10 years ago on Dec. 10, 2012: The Ipswich boys’ basketball team scored 17 points in each of the four quarters in its 68-63 win over Eureka-Bowdle.

20 years ago on Dec. 6, 2002: The South Dakota Class AA All-State volleyball first-team includes cousins Hillary White of state champion Aberdeen Central and Stacy White of third-place Brookings. Both were middle hitters, members of the all- Eastern South Dakota Conference team and wear No. 12.

30 years ago on Dec. 5, 1992: After Winona State used a three-point play to take a 74-73 lead over SDSU in the final seconds of the college men’s basketball game at Frost Arena. While taking the ball out, the Jackrabbits threw the ball away — and the game, or so it seemed. However, a technical foul was called against a Winona player for taunting. With two seconds left, Ryan Naatjes made two free throws to give the Jackrabbits a 75-74 win.

40 years ago on Dec. 7, 1982: Aberdeen voters approved a $2 million bond issue to help fund a new $8.9 million athletic complex (what would become the Barnett Center) on the NSU campus. The measure won approval from 62.3 percent of the voters (4,192 for, 2,528 against). In October, 58.9 percent of voters approved the same issue, but state law called for 60 percent or more to approve bond issues.

50 years ago on Dec. 9, 1972: The Aberdeen Roncalli boys’ basketball team rolled Sisseton 77-52 behind the efforts of Randy Hinds (14 points and 19 rebounds), Al Lingor (21 points) and Greg Bell (20 points). Sisseton was led by Bill Torness and Floyd Hart, who combined for 31 points.
