A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Dec. 18-24:

Last year on Dec. 18, 2021: SDSU lost in the FCS national semifinals 31-17 to Montana State in Bozeman. The Jacks played an incredible 25 football games over two seasons in 2021, the last four in four different time zones. In 2021, the Jacks traveled 19,594 miles, played in front of 231,553 fans and had 201 practices.

10 years ago on Dec. 20, 2012: Mankato junior bowler Dale Boynton Jr. of Aberdeen bowled an average of 215 for nine games, including a 300, to finish second at the Glen Carlson Invitational in Las Vegas in a field of 250 bowlers from colleges across the country.

20 years ago on Dec. 20, 2002: Led by South Dakotans Michelle Bruns (Hecla) and Mary Roddel (Brandon), Southwest Minnesota State stormed back from a 54-41 deficit with 12 minutes to play to defeat USD 75-69 in Vermillion. Bruns and Roddel sparked a 15-0 Mustang run and combined to score 37 points in the second half. The Coyotes were led by Mandy Koupal’s 20 points and 13 rebounds.

30 years ago on Dec. 18, 1992: The Circus Sports Bar amateur baseball team of Aberdeen was named as the independent team of the year by the South Dakota Sportswriters Association. Player-manager Bob Beattie said this year’s additions of Sherm Cutler (Claremont), Curt Fredrickson (Aberdeen) and Bill Richter (Hecla) helped his club go from national runners-up in 1991 to national champions this season. The Circus run to the Over-40 Class A World Series title included an 11-run rally that led to a 19-13 win over Kansas City.

40 years ago on Dec. 23, 1982: Fourth-ranked Class A Aberdeen Central defeated Class B’s No. 1-ranked Hamlin 55-43 in the A and B Boys’ Basketball Shootout at Frost Arena in Brookings. The Golden Eagles were led by Jason Uttermark (23 points), Kurt Southwick (16 points) and Robb White (nine rebounds) while Gary Carlson (13 points and nine rebounds) and Justin Ingalls (12 points) led Hamlin. Coach Wayne Carney’s Chargers would go on to win the State B championship.

50 years ago on Dec. 24, 1972: Rich “Andy” Andrzejewski was named the South Dakota Sportswriters Association’s College Athlete of the Year for 1972. Thus far, the Arlington native has earned 13 letters at Northern State (he would eventually earn 16), and he has been a star in football, basketball, baseball and track. Last year’s winner was Andrzejewski’s Northern basketball teammate Gary Evjen.
