Mertens and Schutter tie for all-around honors at Central meet

Note: Senior Masyn Schutter’s all-around score was incorrectly reported in the initial version of this story. Schutter finished in a tie for first. Additionally, sophomore Kaylee Naasz was fifth in the all-around. The story and results have been updated to reflect these changes.

It was less than ideal in terms of preparation, but the Aberdeen Central gymnastics program squeezed in a competition Tuesday night, hosting Britton-Hecla and Sissetion in a triangular at the Aberdeen Central Auxiliary Gym.

And, all things considered, it turned out to be a good day for the Golden Eagles.

“We haven’t practiced for a whole week with the blizzard,” said Central coach Mickey Everson. “We did a quick warm-up yesterday, ran through everything and went home. So after all that, I felt like we did a great job.”

The Golden Eagles ended the day with a handful of bright spots and a whole lot of hope for the future, Everson said.  Senior Masyn Schutter won the floor exercise, and battled through an early injury to finish in a tie for first in the all-around.

“She sprained a tendon in vault right away, so it was touch-and-go the whole meet making sure she was OK,” Everson said. “Otherwise, the girls are always nervous when we are at home, because they want to perform well for the home crowd. I think they pulled it off.”

Britton-Hecla’s Sterling Mertens also tied for all-around honors after winning both the vault and the bars.

Central’s Regan Lust, an eighth-grader, won the balance beam and was second in floor. Elsewhere, sophomore Kaylee Naasz finished in the top six in three of the four disciplines, and was fifth in the all-around.

“Right after the Hub City meet, we went all-out,” Everson said. “That Hub City meet got us going and got us excited for all these potential things we have to do. We haven’t thrown them all out there yet, but I think the girls are excited for what’s to come.”

Central is off until after the new year, returning to action Jan. 5 in another home triangular with Pierre and Stanley County.
