JAMESTOWN, N.D. – Just a days after posting a season-best score, the Aberdeen Central gymnastics squad finished third at the Jamestown Invitational Saturday.
Central finished with 128.70 points, just 15-hundredths of a point behind Grand Forks, and edging Fargo by more than 3.5 points.
“The girls came off a good meet with a season high score on Thursday, so I think they were feeling good,” said Central coach Mickey Everson. “We went into this meet not knowing what to expect, as we have never competed against Grand Forks or Fargo, so we were excited to see new teams and different judging.”
Central was led by senior Masyn Schutter, who finished sixth in the All-Around, and finished in the top 10 in all four disciplines. Schutter was tied for third in the bars.
Everson said the experience was helpful both to break up the season and to build confidence for a final run at the end of the campaign.
“Some rules and procedures are much different in North Dakota,” Everson said. “They also run their meets differently, so with this excitement we performed very well. We were dragging in warmups but turned it around during competition.”
Staying in competition with both new teams gives the Golden Eagles confidence moving forward, Everson said.
“We were able to stay within tenths of Grand Forks and pulled ahead over Fargo,” she said. “This was a confidence builder. We now have a full week to prepare for ESD and maybe perfect some of the things we were holding back if they were ‘iffy’ skills. We look forward now to having time to breathe and practice for a few days instead of constant competition days. We hope to pull it all together to end our season better than we started.”
Central will head to Pierre Feb. 4 for the Eastern South Dakota Conference meet, which is also the state meet qualifier.
Team scores: 1, Jamestown, 140.2; 2, Grand Forks 128.85; 3, Aberdeen Central 128.70; 4, Fargo, 125.05.
