GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The Aberdeen Cougars boys’ hockey team capped off a memorable weekend of action by winning the championship of the Lee Haugen Memorial Tournament in Grand Forks.
The Cougars defeated Fort Francis out of Ontario, Canada 5-1 in the title game on Sunday afternoon.
“We were able to finish off a great weekend,” said Cougars coach Jeremey Backous. “It was another solid team effort.”
Aberdeen was able to play with a lead the entire way after netting a pair of first-period goals. Devon Fischbach opened the scoring before Lance Siefken added another goal. Brady Huff assisted on both goals.
“I felt like we got off to a bit of a slow start taking two penalties early in the game,” Backous said, “but we were able to kill those off and used that momentum to generate some offensive opportunities.”
Siefken added another goal early in the second period to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead. After a Fort Francis goal, Aiden Posthumus scored late in the period as Aberdeen regained a three-goal advantage.
Quincy Madsen, who assisted on a second-period goal, then capped off the scoring with a goal in the third period.
“Throughout the game I thought we did a really good job of getting pucks and bodies to the front of the net and made it difficult for their goalie,” Backous said. “It was fun to see the kids battle and finish off a great weekend of hockey.”
Samuel Casper stopped 28 of 29 shots in goal for the Cougars.
Aberdeen, 10-7-1 on the season, hosts Brandon Valley in a pair of games this weekend at the Odde Ice Center. Saturday’s puck drop is at 2 p.m., while Sunday’s will be at 4 p.m.
