WAHPETON, N.D. – Playing their fifth game in five days the Aberdeen Cougars found a way to the finish line Tuesday night for another girls’ hockey victory.

The Cougars received goals from six different players, including two goals in the third period, to rally for a 6-5 win over Wahpeton-Breckenridge. Aberdeen, which was just coming off a tournament victory over the weekend, improved to 12-3 on the season.

It marked the second win over Wahpeton-Breckenridge this season, albeit this one was much closer than the previous matchup.

“They got some puck luck and it bounced right for them quite a few times,” said Cougars coach Rob Weinmeister. “They capitalized on some mistakes we made which translated in goals.”

The Cougars grabbed a 2-1 lead in the opening period on goals from Kailyn Poppen and Ema Rehder in what would turn out to be a back-and-forth battle.

The host squad tied the score to close the first period before Lauren Scheel put the Cougars back in front. Wahpeton-Breckenridge tied the game again before Morgan Jones found the back of the net for a 4-3 Aberdeen lead.

Wahpeton-Breckenridge scored back-to-back goals to put the pressure on Aberdeen and the Cougars responded. Alysss Roehrich tied the contest early in the third before Alli Stoltenburg produced the game-winner with about six minutes remaining.

“This is one of those games where we can learn from, because we faced a little adversity when things didn’t go our way,” Weinmeister said. “A lot of back and forth with momentum. We battled back, especially in the third period, we came together as a team.”

Weinmeister said his players were a bit sluggish from a lot of hockey in the past few days, but finished strong.

“The girls turned on the pressure in the third, which made a difference,” he said.
