Gibson wins title, Gauer, Gillen runner-up at Pierre tourney

PIERRE – A trio of Aberdeen Central girls wrestled in championship matches to help lead the Golden Eagles to a fifth place finish as a team during the Girls Governor Wrestling Invitational on Friday.

Katrina Gibson took first place, and Autum Gauer and Madyson Gillen each were runner-up to lead the squad.

“It was a good effort. I think we ended up fifth overall as a team out of 21 teams,” said Central coach Donnie Bowden. “Having three finalists, that always helps get those bonus points and it’s no surprise which three they are.”

Gibson, Gauer and Gillen have helped to set the pace the entire season.

“Three of our more experienced girls. The ones that have kind of been around for a little bit of time now,” Bowden said. “They go out there and they just make improvements from match to match.”

Gibson tends to wear her opponents down before finishing them off, according to Bowden.

“She’s more of a grinder,” Bowden said. “She’s one of those people that she’s going to get you tired and then kind of strike in that third period more so than not.”

Gibson defeated an opponent from Pierre that she lost to twice earlier this season.

Gauer pinned two of her foes in less than a minute.

“She just comes through. That’s what she does. She wins by pin,” Bowden said. “She goes out there and gets after it and ends it quick.”

Gillen also recorded a pair of falls during her matches.

“She’s very dominant,” Bowden said, “when she’s on her feet and when she’s in the top position.”
