BISMARCK, N.D. – Aberdeen Central capped a solid weekend of wrestling with an individual championship and a runner-up finish in team points at the Bismarck Rotary Tournament on Saturday.
Madyson Gillen won the championship at 110 pounds, while the Golden Eagles finished in a tie for second place in the boys’ team points.
“That’s probably the highlight of the tournament is that we ended up getting second on the boys’ side without a champion. That’s hard to do,” said Central coach Donnie Bowden. “That just goes to show you you’re depth and what you did at the other weights. That you came through and you ended up placing.”
Gillen pinned another opponent in quick order to win her title. She recorded a fall in just over a minute.
“Madyson went out there and was dominant again,” Bowden said. “She had four falls on the weekend and I don’t think she wrestled hardly more than a minute. I don’t know how you get more dominant than that.”
Central came up just short in its other final. Rayden Zens dropped a 6-4 decision at 126 pounds.
“You could tell that they really focused on what he was going to do and what he is about, because they kind of shut down everything for us until the third period,” Bowden said. “We were down 5-0 and we came storming back. It just wasn’t enough at the end.”
The Golden Eagles ended up with a variety of other place winners as well.
On the boys’ side Mason Schrempp and Jacob Krenz both took third, Logan Opitz was fourth, Elias Biegler was fifth, Porter Lozenski and Cordell Rychlik were both sixth, and Ridley Waldo and Tate Huff were both seventh. On the girls’ side Ula Martin was third, and Katrina Gibson was fourth.
“Like any coach, you want to place everybody. We were right there in that blood round (Friday) to get three more kids in,” Bowden said. “We get those other three kids in there you really widen that gap on that second place and you really have a little bit more to build on, but we’re really going that right direction right now. I’m really excited to see what next week brings.”
Central heads to Brandon for a triangular with Yankton and Brandon Valley on Thursday. The girls are at a tournament in Harrisburg on Friday, and the boys compete at a dual tournament in Harrisburg on Saturday.
