SUMMIT – Playing with a little extra motivation, Aberdeen Christian put the clamps on Waubay-Summit Thursday night.

The second-rated Knights contested every shot, held the Mustangs to just two field goals in the opening half, and claimed a 53-30 non-conference boys’ basketball win in a contest between two undefeated squads.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the effort we put forth tonight,” said Christian coach Matt Rohrbach. “We were emotionally charged after losing to them at state last year. I thought we channeled that emotion and put together our best defensive effort of the season so far.”

The game was tight early before the Christian offense got going in the second quarter as four different players scored during an 8-0 run to open a double-digit lead.

Waubay-Summit meanwhile was struggling to get into any offensive rhythm. The Mustangs managed just one point in more than six minutes of action.

The Knights doubled their 10-point halftime lead by the end of the third quarter as Jackson Isakson had eight points in the stanza, and Christian was well on its way to a ninth straight victory to start the season.

“Our team plays with a motto of winning every possession,” Rohrbach said, “and tonight they showed me how serious they are about honoring that.”

Isakson led the Knights with 16 points and seven rebounds. Ethan Russell contributed 13 points, and Konnar Furman added nine.

Damon Opdahl scored 13 points to lead the Mustangs, going 11-for-11 from the free-throw line. Jackson Wohlleber followed with eight points. Waubay-Summit dropped to 10-1 with the setback.

The Knights will try to exact another measure of revenge when they take on top-rated White River at 7 p.m. Saturday during the Hanson Classic at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.

“It isn’t very often you get to have back-to-back games by two teams you want to get revenge on,” Rohrbach said.
