A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Jan. 8-14:

Last year on Jan. 12, 2022: The South Dakota High School Activities Association board of directors voted to start the first sanctioned South Dakota high school softball season in March 2023.

10 years ago on Jan. 8, 2013: The Presentation College men’s and women’s basketball teams each finished a stretch of four games over the course of 68 hours in Aberdeen, with both teams winning all four games. Meanwhile on the other side of the state, 17 games into their season, the South Dakota Mines men’s basketball team had scored 1,153 points, the same as their opponents.

20 years ago on Jan. 11, 2003: Justin Busch, 13, became the youngest bowler in Rapid City history to roll a 300. Busch, who has been bowling for four years, rolled a 662 series (126-300-236).

30 years ago on Jan. 9, 1993: The undefeated NSU men’s basketball team (15-0) took down Jamestown 87-61. Eric Kline led the Wolves with 26 points and seven rebounds while teammate Paul Sather added 16 points.

40 years ago on Jan. 11, 1983: Led by a trio of South Dakota starters, the University of Colorado women’s basketball team won its 43 rd home game in a row. Lisa Van Goor (Yankton), Kris Holwarda (Brookings) and Diane Hiemstra (Yankton) combined for 61 points in the Buffaloes’ 92-57 win over Utah State.

50 years ago on Jan. 9, 1973: Keith Kusler grabbed an offensive rebound and scored with two seconds remaining to give Aberdeen Central a 63- 62 win over visiting Huron. Kusler led the Golden Eagles with 22 points. Bob Olson added 13 points and eight rebounds for the winners. Brian Shanks led Huron with 40 points and eight rebounds.
