Second-half surge carries Knights to victory

WAVERLY – Aberdeen Christian outscored Waverly-South Shore 31-10 in the second half to fuel a non-conference girls’ basketball win Saturday afternoon.

The Knights overcame a six-point halftime deficit on the way a 41-26 victory.

“The second half we played really good defense and our passing was really good,” said Knights coach Cristian Martinez. “We played as a team and trusted each other.”

Chloe Bosma and Chloe Holt combined for 28 points in the final 16 minutes to spark the Christian offense. Bosma scored 15 points in the second half, while Holt added 13, nine of them coming on three three-point field goals.

The Knights began to take control in the third quarter. After managing just 10 points in the opening half, Christian scored 17 points in the third period. Holt scored 10 and Bosma seven as the Knights opened a five-point edge.

Christian then put the finishing touches on its first win of the season by outscoring the Coyotes 14-4 in the final quarter. Bosma had eight points in that period as the Knights steadily pulled away.

Bosma finished with 18 points, 12 rebounds and three steals. Holt, in her first game back from an ankle injury, had 17 points.

Carlee Mushitz led Waverly-South Shore with 11 points, and Emily Heuer added eight.

Martinez said the squad will work to keep improving, especially when it comes to ballhandling.

“We’re still working hard to be more careful with the ball,” he said. “Today we had just 14 turnovers.”

Christian, 1-13, plays host to North Central in a girls-boys doubleheader on Tuesday at the Aberdeen Civic Arena. The girls tip-off around 6:30 p.m., with the boys to follow.
