PIERRE – The Aberdeen Central gymnastics program did not claim any automatic qualifying spots for the state meet at Saturday’s Eastern South Dakota Conference/Region 2 qualifier, but Golden Eagle head coach Mickey Everson had a hard time finding weak spots in her team’s effort or season.
Central finished in seventh place in the team standings. Team qualifying spots were awarded to each region champion plus the next six highest scores, regardless of region status.
Individual spots also went to the top five finishers in each event.
“My girls performed their hearts out,” Everson said. “This last week we worked so hard to perfect every little thing and even add a few higher-level skills to get us up there (in the scoring). Unfortunately, the scores did not reflect how well we did. It was frustrating and disappointing. But I am so proud of what they accomplished and how hard they worked to get this far.”
Central was led in all four disciplines by senior captain Masyn Schutter, who finished 14th in vault, 24th in bars, 31st on the balance beam, 26th in floor exercise and 16th in the all-around competition.
Central has an outside shot at an at-large bid in the individual events, which will be awarded on an as-needed basis. The top five finishers in each region and the in-season qualifiers will receive automatic bids with at-large bids awarded to fill in the 40-athlete fields.
Central will serve as the host for the State Gymnastics Meet Friday and Saturday.
