RAPID CITY – Aberdeen Central has seven wrestlers alive on the boys side and two on the girls side, including five in the semifinals, after Day 1 of the Class A State Wrestling Tournament, which got underway Thursday at the Monument in Rapid City.

Of the Golden Eagle boys, three advanced to the championship semifinals, while the remaining four will begin in the third-round consolation wrestlebacks when action resumes today.

“Getting seven through is good,” said Central coach Donnie Bowden, who noted the Golden Eagles lost some close matches in the consolation rounds that would have put more through to Day 2 action. “That’s the most we’ve placed in three or four years, so things are looking good there. We still have an opportunity to get a team trophy.”

Rayden Zens (126 pounds), Mason Schrempp (145), and Jacob Krenz (285) all advanced to the semifinal round with wins in their opening two matches of the tournament.

Those wins, coupled with some hard-fought consolation victories, have the Golden Eagles sitting in a tie for fifth in team points after the first day. Central has 59 total points, tied with Rapid City Stevens. Perennial power, Pierre, leads the pack with 93.5 points.

Porter Lozenski (113), Tate Huff (132), Logan Opitz (160) and Cole Dunlavy (182) are also still in contention for the Golden Eagles.

“I think our expectations were to be a little higher, but this is where we’re at,” Bowden said. “We have seven guys left so we’re just going to focus on getting them as high as we can.”

The Central girls, which qualified three wrestlers for the individual tournament, have two remaining. Madyson Gillen (113 pounds) and Katrina Gibson (154), each won their first two matches in dominant fashion. Gillen and Gibson earned pins in each of their matches, including Gillen’s pin of Clark-Willow Lake’s Dani Batchelor, who pinned her earlier in the season at the Lee Wolf Invitational.

“Katrina and Madyson were just dominant today,” Bowden said.

Central’s Autumn got one win in the 285-pound division.

Elsewhere in Class A action, Milbank Area’s Barrett Schneck earned a technical fall and a pin to move to the semis at 170 pounds. Teammate Owen Fischer will wrestle in the consolation wrestlebacks at 106 pounds.

Holden Hawkins of Sisseton also earned a spot in the 132-pound semifinals. Teammates Mason Shultz (182 pounds) and Ian Metz (120) will wrestle in the consolation rounds.
