Central advances five to semifinals at state wrestling

RAPID CITY - Aberdeen Central has seven wrestlers alive on the boys side and two on the girls side, including five in the semifinals, after Day 1 of the Class A State Wrestling Tournament, which got underway Thursday at the Monument in Rapid City. Of the Golden Eagle boys, three advanced to the championship semifinals, while the remaining four will begin in the third-round consolation wrestlebacks when action resumes today. “Getting seven through is good,” said Central coach Donnie Bowden, who noted the Golden Eagles lost some close matches in the consolation rounds that would have put more through to Day 2 action. “That’s the most we’ve placed in three or four years, so things are looking good there. We still have an opportunity to get a team trophy.” Rayden Zens (126 pounds), Mason Schrempp (145), and Jacob Krenz (285) all advanced to the semifinal round with wins in their opening two matches of the tournament.
