SIOUX FALLS – Sioux Falls Roosevelt used a 17-4 third quarter to erase a 10-point halftime deficit and then held off Aberdeen Central for a 61-57 non-conference boys’ basketball win Monday night.

The Golden Eagles built a 17-9 lead in the opening quarter thanks, in part to two 3-pointers from Jett Carlson and one from Spencer Barr.

The Golden Eagles built on a four-point lead to start the second quarter with a 15-2 run as Carter Dingman continued Central’s 3-point barrage. The senior knocked down three shots from behind the arc as Roosevelt struggled to stop the Central scoring attack.

While the Rough Riders were able to close the out the half on a 9-2 run, the Golden Eagles led 34-24 at halftime.

“We played very aggressively in the first half, which led to good looks on offense,” said Central coach Brent Norberg. “We handled their pressure well and defended really well.”

However, the third quarter belonged to Roosevelt. The Rough Riders began the quarter on a 14-0 run, while Central finished the quarter without scoring a basket from the field. The Golden Eagles were only able to muster four points from the free-throw line as the Roosevelt took a 41-38 lead into the final period.

“We did not play aggressively,” Norberg said. “We missed some open 3’s and did not attack the basket.”

The fourth quarter was a back-and-forth affair as Roosevelt began the final frame with nine unanswered points to stretch its lead to 50-38. Central would not go away, however, and chipped away at the Rough Riders lead, eventually cutting it down to 59-57 in the closing seconds. Roosevelt capped off the comeback win with a pair of free-throws by Garang Kuol.

Although the Golden Eagles could not complete the fourth-quarter comeback, Norberg was pleased with his team’s effort.

“The kids played hard and did not quit after getting down ten,” Norberg said.

Naser Ismail and Hayden Goff each had 11 points apiece for Roosevelt.

Barr and Carlson led Central with 14 points each. Parker Lemer had nine, while Dingman added eight.

Central finished the regular season at 6-12 and will now prepare to play in the SoDak 16 on Saturday.
