HURON – Aberdeen Central won four weight classes, finished runner-up in four others and grabbed the team championship at the Huron Invitational wrestling tournament on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles finished with 258.5 points, two better than second place Winner Area.
“It’s always icing on the cake when you’re able to win one,” said Central coach Donnie Bowden of the team title. “You go in there trying to win as many matches as you can and try to place every kid as high as they can. There were some really quality opponents there.”
Taking first for the Golden Eagles were Ayden Gisi, Rayden Zens, Samson Flakus and Bryce Beitelspacher.
Bowden was just happy for one more opportunity to compete before the upcoming region meet next weekend.
“It’s just kind of one of those of days that it was just good to go out there and compete,” Bowden said. “When you look around the state, there’s not many people wrestling.”
It was a chance for the Golden Eagles to face another round of competition before the post season.
“For us, it was good for us to go put our hands on someone different and get ready for next weekend,” Bowden said.
The Region 3A tournament is set for Saturday in Mission. Bowden said the Eagles should enter with high seeds in most weight classes.
“Every team is going to have some quality kids,” Bowden said.
The Central girls competed at a tournament in Harrisburg on Saturday.
Katrina Gibson took first place for the Eagles, while Madyson Gillen finished third.
Gibson had four wins by fall, including one against an opponent she lost to earlier this season.

“She’s kind of separated herself from the field,” Bowden said.
Gibson continues to rise in the state rankings as the season winds down.
“She’s really just progressed all year long,” Bowden said. “She’s done the little things to get better.”
The Central girls, who will not compete in the region, have their Eastern South Dakota Conference tournament Tuesday in Mitchell. Those matches will count towards seeding for the state tournament in Rapid City.
