The high school basketball postseason begins in earnest this week as girls’ basketball teams across the state vie for a trip to the state tournaments. A total of 16 teams from Class A will advance out of their respective regions to next week’s SoDak 16 with eight teams advancing to the state tournament. This year’s Class A tournament will be in Watertown March 9-11.

Here is a look at three regions in the area:

Region 1A Tonight at Sisseton and Milbank, and Thursday at highest remaining seeds

Sisseton enters the region as a team that has been under the radar all season. The Redmen are 17-2 and have been outscoring their opponents by an average of 23.8 points per game. Sisseton has the size and athleticism to make a deep postseason run.

Milbank Area is the second seed and is led by 5-foot-10 senior Maurina Street. The Bulldogs struggled a bit down the stretch, but had an eight-game winning streak in the middle of the season. Milbank Area is a younger team, but has the talent to make some noise in the postseason.

Aberdeen Roncalli enters as the fourth seed. The Cavaliers are a young team that has had its ups and downs with no seniors on the roster and just one junior. The team, led by sophomore Ava Hanson, is no stranger to postseason success, finishing fifth last season in the Class B state tournament after winning the Class A state championship two years ago.

Hamlin has defeated its opponents by an average of 26.6 points per game, with some of its biggest wins of the season coming against second-ranked Vermillion and Class B No. 1 Viborg-Hurley.
