Class B girls’ basketball teams begin postseason play this week with regional competition on their quest for a trip to the state tournament. The top two teams from each region will advance to SoDak 16 games next week. This year’s Class B girls basketball tournament will be in Huron March 9-11.
Here is a look at three regions in the area:
Region 1B Tonight and Tuesday at highest seeds and Thursday at Webster
This region starts with Warner as the top seed. The Monarchs have been in and out of the Class B ratings this season and will be looking to advance to the state basketball tourney after having won the state volleyball championship last fall. Warner benefits by being the top seed as it will avoid playing second- seeded Leola-Frederick Area, the only team in the region to defeat the Monarchs in the regular season.
Leola-Frederick Area began the season 13-1, but has lost five of its last six games. The Titans will host an Aberdeen Christian team that ended the regular season on a high note with a win over Langford Area, which gave the Knights the seventh seed.
Northwestern is the third seed and has the potential to cause problems for any postseason foe.
Team W L
Warner 14-6
Leola-Frederick Area 14-6
Northwestern 12-7
Hitchcock-Tulare 5-13
Britton-Hecla 5-14
Wilmot 5-15
Aberdeen Christian 2-18
Langford Area 3-15
Waverly-South Shore 0-19
Tonight’s Game postponed to either Thursday or Friday: Waverly-South Shore at Langford Area, 7 p.m.
Tuesday’s Games postponed to Saturday: Waverly-South Shore/Langford Area winner at Warner; Britton-Hecla at Hitchcock-Tulare; Aberdeen Christian at Leola/Frederick Area; Wilmot at Northwestern.
Thursday’s Games at Webster postponed to Monday: 6 and 7:30 p.m.
Region 2B Tuesday at Wolsey and Arlington, Thursday at Huron Arena
Region 2B is stacked with five teams with 13 wins or more. Wolsey-Wessington sits atop the region and looks to contend for a state championship in the postseason. The Warbirds are led by 6-foot-4 senior Mallory Miller, who recently committed to Arizona State. Wolsey-Wessington’s two losses came against
number one Viborg-Hurley and Class A Lakota Tech, both at neutral sites. The Warbirds have also beaten several quality opponents, and will be a handful for whoever they face this postseason.

Second-seeded Arlington has quietly put together a strong season after beginning the year 0-2. The Cardinals have only lost to one Class B squad in their four losses, a 63-45 loss to Howard in the season opener, and will be a tough out in the postseason.
Castlewood is the third seed, and of its seven losses, five have come at the hands of Class A opponents. The Warriors will rely on the senior duo of Maddie Horn and Mackenzie Everson to lead the team into the postseason.
Fourth-seeded Deubrook Area and fifth-seeded James Valley Christian are teams with solid records and have the talent to pull off upsets on any given night.
Team W L
Wolsey-Wessington 18-2
Arlington 16-4
Castlewood 13-7
Deubrook Area 15-4
James Valley Christian 14-6
De Smet 9-11
Oldham-Ramona/Rutland 7-13
Iroquois/Lake Preston 6-14
Flandreau Indian 2-16
Tonight’s Game: Flandreau Indian at Iroquois/Lake Preston at Lake Preston, 7 p.m.
Tuesday’s Games at Wolsey: Deubrook Area James Valley Christian, 3 p.m.; Flandreau Indian-Iroquois/Lake Preston winner vs. Wolsey-Wessington, 4:30 p.m.
Tuesday’s Games at Arlington: Oldham-Ramona/Rutland vs Arlington, 6 p.m.; De Smet vs. Castlewood, 7:30 p.m.
Thursday’s Games at Huron Arena: Times TBD.
Region 6B Tonight, Tuesday and Thursday at highest seeds
A perennial power sits atop Region 6B as the Sully Buttes Chargers enter the region tournament with the top seed after a 17-3 regular season campaign. The Chargers lost back-to-back games to Miller and Timber Lake in the middle of the season before losing a high-scoring overtime affair to second-ranked Wolsey-Wessington, 87-81, late in the season.
Sully Buttes is currently fifth in overall seed points. The Chargers will be a tough out no matter who they play in the postseason.
Potter County started the year 7-1, but has gone 6-6 since the hot start. However, it is hard to overlook the Battlers as they enter the tournament as the two seed.

Lyman is the third seed and enters as a team filled with youth. The Raiders have just one senior, but boast young talent with junior Skyler Volmer, who recorded her 1,000th career point in January, and 6-foot freshman Mak Scott. Keep an eye on the Raiders, who, despite their youth, have the talent to win on any given night.
Herreid-Selby Area enters as the fourth seed, and although they have a record of 10-10, that record is deceiving. The Wolverines were 3-8 before finishing the season with a 7-2 record. Herreid-Selby Area carries a load of momentum entering the region and should not be ignored.

Sully Buttes 17-3

Lyman 12-7
Herreid/Selby Area 10-10
