BROOKINGS – The Aberdeen Cougars extended their winning streak to a dozen games with a pair of victories Saturday during the Dakota Premier Classic in Brookings.

The Cougars advanced to the championship game after blanking a squad from Minnetonka, Minn. 1-0, and skating past the Arizona Kachinas 7-2.

Rachel Siefken had the only goal of the game against Minnetonka on an assist from Rylee Hepper.

Substitute goalie Ema Rehder stopped 15 shots filling in for normal starter Chloe Vikander.

“Chloe was a little under the weather and we had to have Ema Rehder step in and play goalie,” said Cougars coach Rob Weinmeister. “The team rallied around her and played outstanding defense and had great pressure to limit their opportunities.”

The Cougars scored the first five goals against Arizona on the way to that victory. Five different players scored in the barrage: Alyssa Roehrich, Hepper, Madalynn Witte, Alli Stoltenburg and Morgan Jones.

Jones and Roehrich also added third-period goals as Aberdeen outshot its foe 58-7.

“The girls skated hard,” Weinmeister said of the second victory on the day. “Again, it’s an advantage to have a deep bench.”

The Cougars, 21-3 on the season, take on Omaha, Neb. in the championship contest at 10 this morning.
