MISSION – The Aberdeen Central boys wrestling squad qualified a full slate of wrestlers for next week’s Class A State Wrestling Tournament in Rapid City after putting all 14 athletes in the top four of Saturday’s Region 3A tournament in Mission.
The Golden Eagles finished with one first place showing, along with seven runner-up finishes, three thirds and two fourths at the region on the way to a second-place finish in team points.
“We wrestled really well,” said Central coach Donnie Bowden. “We did a good job of getting qualified. We won quite a few of those tough semifinal matches and some tough blood-round matches to get into the semis. The finals didn’t quite go the way we wanted, but we ended up with (two) fourths and the rest were top three. Not much more you can ask for.”
Bowden noted the last time Central came in with 14 qualifiers, the Golden Eagles came home with even bigger hardware.
“The last time we did it, we ended up winning the whole thing,” Bowden said.
That title came back in 2014. Central has had two runner-up showings since, one in 2015 and the other in 2017.
Central also qualified for the duals tournament for the first time since the return of the duals in 2020.
The Golden Eagles will be the eighth seed and take on top-seeded Brandon Valley in the first round.
Rayden Zens won a title at 126 pounds to lead the Central delegation at the region.
“It was a very good day,” Bowden said. “We’re happy with where we’re at and excited for next week.”
