Looking Back

A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Feb. 12-18:

Last year on Feb. 15, 2022: All five Aberdeen high school basketball teams that played tonight won; the girls’ teams from Christian (over Langford); Central (over Watertown) and Roncalli (over Florence-Henry for coach Derek Larson’s 200th career win) and the boys’ teams from Christian (over Langford) and Central (over Watertown).

10 years ago on Feb. 16, 2013: As an NCAA Division III men’s basketball team without a conference, Presentation College played 17 of its 25 games on the road this season, traveling 11,038 miles. Meanwhile, the Warner boys’ basketball team traveled 998 miles in the last four days. Their schedule took them to the far southwest corner of the state to play Custer and the far northeast corner to play Rosholt.

20 years ago on Feb. 18, 2003: The Aberdeen Roncalli girls’ basketball team clipped host Redfield 46-38. Shaina Riggs and Traci Stone combined for 26 points for the winners, while Aubrey Baxter scored 21 for the Pheasants.

30 years ago on Feb. 13, 1993: It was one of the most bizarre basketball bounces in the history of
SD high school hoops. Tim Sillman of Watertown tried a shot near the end of second overtime about
six feet from the Aberdeen Civic Arena basket. Jesse Mattson of Aberdeen Central blocked the shot, and the ball bounced to the floor, went off the backboard and went in with five seconds left. Jason Sutherland stole the inbounds pass, was fouled and made two free throws to give Watertown a 66-62 win. Sutherland ended with 33 points.

40 years ago on Feb. 12, 1983: SDSU used three South Dakota track legends to set a Vermillion DakotaDome record by more four seconds in the 4X400-meter relay in 3:20.3. Running for the Jacks were Tom Christjain, Everett Gebhart, Ervin Gebhart and Jeff Tiefenthaler. The Gebhart brothers are from Elkton and Tiefenthaler from Armour.

50 years ago on Feb. 17, 1973: Faulkton won the State B wrestling championship for the third year in a row. The Trojans scored 74 points to take the crown in Aberdeen, while Northwestern surprised many by finishing second with 57.5 points. Faulkton was led by individual champs Don Bowar (145) and Lynne Hammond (155). Other area champs were Tom Dietrich (132) of Mobridge and the Northwestern duo of LeRoy Braun (138) and Tom Boekelheide (185).
