A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Feb. 26-March 4:

Last year on Feb. 26, 2022: Watertown sophomore Sloan Johannsen went 50-0 to win the State A 113-pound wrestling title. With the win, he became Watertown’s first unbeaten state champion in 18 years. Dan Olson of the Arrows went 39-0 to win the Class A 130-pound state title in 2004. Johannsen is now 84-1 after winning the A 106-pound title as a freshman.

10 years ago on March 1, 2013: In the first round of the varsity girls’ state hockey tourney in Huron, eighth-seeded Aberdeen defeated top-seeded Brookings 2-1. Madyson Ogdahl’s goal with 2:41 left in the game broke the 1-1 tie. Hailey Gould also scored for the Cougars while goalie Hailey Huff had 35 saves.

20 years ago on March 1, 2003: Watertown won the State A wrestling tourney in coach Marv Sherrill’s last season. Sherrill is stepping down after 35 years and nine state team titles with the Arrows.

30 years ago on March 2, 1993: One of two Rapid City Thrillers vans was rear-ended in Fargo, sending four players to the hospital and leaving others with sore necks, backs and other pains, including coach Eric Musselman. Players Richard Coffey, Richard Morton, Ralph Lewis and Clinton Smith were treated and released from St. Luke’s Hospital in Fargo. The Thrillers’ game that night at the Fargodome against the Fargo-Moorhead Fever was postponed. The driver of the car was cited for leaving the scene of an accident, driving with a suspended license and driving without insurance.

40 years ago on Feb. 26, 1983: Tim Manning of Vermillion won the 138-pound Class A wrestling title, helping the Tanagers win the team title as well. He finished his career with 94 straight wins and three state titles. His career record was 146-20-1.

50 years ago on March 2, 1973: Hamlin slowed down the game, but Sioux Valley prevailed to win the Region 3B boys’ basketball championship 25-23. Henry “Hank” Lengkeek gave Sioux Valley its only lead of the game by hitting a shot from the corner with two seconds left. The game was tied at 2 at the end of the first quarter, and Hamlin led 6-4 at halftime and 14-11 at the end of the third quarter. Lengkeek, who had 26 points to advance the Cossacks to the region championship, had 11 points. Steve Brown, who was averaging 31 points per game, scored 21 for Hamlin.

Meanwhile in nearby Brookings on March 2-3, 1973, SDSU was hosting the 11th annual NCAA College Division national wrestling tourney in its new Frost Arena. There was wrestling from morning until night on 10 mats with more than 450 wrestlers from 130 colleges. Cal Poly (CA) won its sixth straight national title while three North Central Conference schools finished third (NDSU), fourth (Northern Iowa) and sixth (SDSU).
