SISSETON – Aberdeen Roncalli finally got the win it was looking for all week.
After four days of weather delays, Aberdeen Roncalli got its postseason going Saturday with a 45-32 win over Redfield in the first round of the Region 1A girls’ basketball tournament in Sisseton.
The Cavaliers used a full-court press and a solid overall defensive effort in the win.
“I thought our full-court was good early,” said Roncalli coach Derek Larson. “Maybe caught them off guard. They didn’t handle the ball well in the first half.”
That pressure led to some transition buckets for the Cavaliers, which proved important in the overall scheme of the game.
“I think, on the night, we made one jump shot total,” Larson said. “There’s not many games for us this year when you can say we won a game and we only made one jump shot.”
While Roncalli led from the outset, Redfield never fully disappeared from contention, meaning the Cavaliers had to find other methods of staying in front.
“I thought our defense was really good,” Larson said. “Probably one of our better defensive games on the year. They didn’t get a ton of offensive boards either, even though they’re a little bigger than us. Little things like that won us the game.”
Ava Hanson finished with 20 points for Roncalli. Claire Crawford added eight, while Maddie Huber and McKenna O’Keefe had six points each.
Redfield’s scoring efforts were led by Gracie Fast and Ellie Evans with eight points each. Kate Rozell added seven.
Roncalli, 11-9, will now face top-seeded Sisseton Monday for a spot in the SoDak 16. Sisseton claimed a 58-49 win in the regular-season meeting between the two teams back on Jan. 13. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. in Sisseton.
