Multiple-event winners flourished at the Northern State Open track and field meet at the Barnett Center on Tuesday.
One of the highlights on the girls’ side came from Hitchcock-Tulare’s Avery Miles, who captured wins in the 800-meter and 1,600-meter runs. Miles said she knew the hard work in the offseason would pay off early in the season.
“I just kind of trusted myself and the work I put in this winter,” Miles said. “It’s kind of just a practice meet because the indoor times don’t really mean anything, so I knew whatever happened today just happened and I went out there and had fun and just raced.”
Miles said she likes to start towards the back and work her way past her opponents.
“I don’t tend to like to lead very often,” Miles said. “I like to chase, but the time arose for me to take the lead, so I started to see if I could lap girls, and that was kind of how I raced today.”
Miles says she enjoys running the 1,600-meter run more than the 800-meter run.
“I run cross-country so I think the distance aspect to it is what I’m used to,” Miles said.
Miles also noted that she wants to place in both events at the state meet and improve on her times in both as well.

Other winners in girls’ events included Frederick Area’s Sofia Losure in the high jump and Redfield’s Camryn Rohlfs in the long jump.
On the boys’ side, Herreid-Selby Area’s Brenden Begeman turned in a stellar performance. The future South Dakota State football player won a trio of events, including the 55-meter dash, shot put, and long jump. Begeman was pleased with his performance in the shot put, while also being surprised at his performance in the 55-meter dash.
“I was pretty happy with my shot-put distance,” Begeman said. “I just wanted to get over 50 for the first meet. I was really surprised with my 55-meter dash. I’ve never really won sprinting events before, so it’s kind of like a first for me, and yeah, that felt really good.”

Begeman was also content with his long jump performance.
“It wasn’t my personal best,” Begeman said. “My knees kind of hurt today, but looking forward to outdoor season and hopefully improving on that.”
Begeman hopes to continue to improve and compete in four different by season’s end.
“My goals for the season (are) to make state and compete in four different events, and to place in the top three in the triple jump and shot put.”
Aberdeen Roncalli’s Jayden Munroe won a pair of events, capturing wins in the 200-meter dash and triple jump. Munroe said he started slow in both events but was able to finish strong.
“The 200 started off pretty bad, but as I got to the back stretch I kind of took advantage of it and that’s where I did most of my work,” Munroe said. “The triple jump I was a little tired going into it. My first jump wasn’t the best but my other two were pretty good, so that was good.”

Munroe says he prefers the triple jump more than any other event.
“I like the triple jump the most,” Munroe said. “It came kind of easier to me. It came kind of natural, and it’s just a lot of fun.”
Munroe also said his goals are to win state and break school records.
Roncalli coach Brady Lesnar was also pleased with how Munroe has improved and matured during his career.
“Just seeing him as an athlete the last couple of years, he’s really matured as an athlete, and especially his last jump,” Lesnar said. “I mean, you just saw, almost so effortlessly, he was just relaxed jumping, and that’s just coming with time. Getting to his senior year, it’s just good to see him in that form. Once we get outside, it’s gonna be a lot of fun, too.”
Munroe also placed third in the 55-meter dash.
Overall, Lesnar was impressed with how his team improved at the meet.
“I thought we had a good week. I think we’ve improved even from last week,” Lesnar said. “I thought my pole vaulters did very well. A lot of the kids were at their PR or even better. Some of our throwers improved. Just fun. A fun meet.”
