RAPID CITY – Aberdeen Central wrapped up a busy two days of tennis by not dropping a match on Friday.

The Golden Eagles recorded 9-0 victories over both St. Thomas and Rapid City Central.

The local squad ended up going 2-2 on the weekend and got a feel for where its at to start the season.

“There’s a lot of good that came out of this. At certain spots we’re better than I thought we would be. I think we can be a pretty competitive team,” said Eagles coach Trent Kurtz. “We definitely found some strengths, some weaknesses, but we took care of business today like we should have. Both of those teams are pretty young and inexperienced. They’re going to be good in a couple of years.”

After a cooler day on Thursday, which saw some matches moved indoors, Friday was bright and sunny.

“We left with sunburns,” Kurtz said. “It’s our first day outside.”

The Eagles are now scheduled to have a full week off before returning to action in April. Kurtz said the schedule works out well in the short term, but who knows what the future will hold.

“We learned kind of what a lot of our weaknesses were and now we have nothing scheduled this week, so we get a week of practice to really fine tune some things,” Kurtz said. “But now we’re back to East River outdoor tennis, which who knows when that’s going to happen.”

Regardless of when the Eagles play next, there is plenty of reason for optimism for the upcoming season.

“Just a fun group of kids,” Kurtz said, “so I’m really looking forward to the year.”
