Looking Back

A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of March 19-25:

Last year on March 20, 2022: It was a historic afternoon for the USD women’s basketball team as the Coyotes ripped the nation’s fifth-rated team to advance to the NCAA DI Tournament’s Sweet 16 for the first time in school history. The Coyotes used its scorching defense to burn host Baylor 61-47 in Waco, Texas. It was the 17 th time this season the Coyotes held an opponent under 50 points. The Coyotes (29-5) were led by its trio of seniors Hannah Sjerven, Chloe Lamb (Onida) and Liv Korngable who combined for 42 points. Baylor (28-7) got 23 points from seniors Queen Egbo and NaLyssa Smith, both members of Baylor’s 2019 national championship team.

USD, which has not trailed in 80 minutes of tourney action, ended a bunch of Baylor streaks. Before playing the Coyotes, the Bears had: won 137 straight games against non-ranked, non-Big 12 Conference opponents; won 66 straight games (since Jan. 13, 2014, 66-55 vs. UConn) against non-conference opponents on its home floor; qualified for the last 12 Sweet 16 rounds; and had not been held under 50 points for the last 287 straight games (a 52-45 loss to Oklahoma State on Dec. 30, 2015).

10 years ago on March 20, 2013: It was quite a day at Yankton Bowl. Not only did Stacy Barta roll an all-time three-game series record (810) for women, 80-year-old Frank Osborn of Mission Hill rolled a 300. Barta of Yankton broke her own record (798) she had set 10 years ago.

20 years ago on March 21-22, 2003: After producing a triple double (16 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists) in a win over Doland-Conde, junior Ray Taken Alive helped McLaughlin finish fifth in the State B tourney in Aberdeen with a win over White Lake with 23 points, 12 rebounds, eight assists, seven steals and two blocked shots.

30 years ago on March 20, 1993: Warner defeated Baltic 60-53 for the State B boys’ basketball championship in Aberdeen. Chuck Welke led Warner with 27 points.

40 years ago on March 19, 1983: Sioux Falls Washington defeated Pierre 59-56 to win the boys’ basketball State A title. Coach John Odney’s Warriors finished 23-0, becoming only the fifth Class A team in state history to finished a season undefeated (Miller, Sisseton, Belle Fourche and Huron).

50 years ago on March 25, 1973: Long-time (since 1952) Sioux City East head track coach Bob Guhin was honored by being named the high school referee for the 74 th Drake Relays April 27-28. Guhin is an Aberdeen Central and NSU graduate.
