It has come down to this. The final 32 teams in Class A and B will compete for berths in the state tournaments this evening.

The teams competed in regional action last week, but face their most difficult tests in the SoDak 16. It is anyone’s game and teams will be working hard to earn a coveted trip to the state tournament.

This year’s Class B tournament is in Huron, while the Class A tournament takes place in Watertown.

Here is a look at SoDak 16 matchups involving area teams:

CLASS B

Wolsey-Wessington (20-2) vs Leola-Frederick Area (16-6), 6 p.m. at the Huron Arena

These are two teams that have been heading in opposite directions late in the season.

The top-seeded Warbirds have losses against Viborg-Hurley and Lakota Tech, both at neutral sites, and have the firepower and size to make opposing defenses miserable. Wolsey-Wessington has won its last 11 games. The Warbirds are looking to qualify for their first state tournament appearance as a co-op.

Leola-Frederick Area began the season 13-1 before dropping five of its last six regular season contests. The Titans have relied on a stout defense all season, and will need its defense to step up against a talented Warbirds squad. Leola-Frederick Area is looking for its first state tournament appearance since 2016.

The teams share three common opponents, as both defeated Faulkton Area and Sunshine Bible Academy. Wolsey-Wessington defeated SBA twice this season. The Warbirds also defeated Jones County, while the Titans lost to the Coyotes by 21 points.

Wall (17-5) vs Warner (16-6), 6:30 p.m. at Stanley County High School in Fort Pierre

Both of these teams will match up well on the court as both have several players that range from 5-foot-9 to 6-foot-1.

Wall is looking to return to the state tournament after placing eighth last year. The Eagles have won their last nine games and have lost to only one Class B school this season, losing to top-rated Viborg-Hurley at the Parkston Classic.

Warner began the season 11-2 but ended the regular season losing four out of its last seven games. The Monarchs are looking for their first state tournament appearance since finishing in fifth place in 2019.

The Eagles and Monarchs had no common opponents during the regular season.

CLASS A

Hamlin (21-0) vs Milbank Area (14-7), 7 p.m. at the Watertown Civic Arena

This matchup features a pair of teams that have met already this season.

Hamlin has been dominant this season, as the Chargers have been beating their opponents by an average of 27.6 points per game. The Chargers have beaten some of the best teams in Class A and B. Hamlin has qualified for the state tournament each of the past three seasons, finishing runner-up the past two. The Chargers are hoping the third time will be the charm.

Milbank Area will look to play spoilers in this one. The Bulldogs began the season 9-3 but have struggled since then, losing four of their last seven games. Milbank Area is looking to pull the upset and qualify for its first state tournament since finishing in third place in 2007.

Hamlin won the regular season matchup, 69-35, on January 30.

Sisseton (19-2) vs Parkston (16-6), 7 p.m. at Sioux Valley Public School in Volga

This game features two teams with plenty of talent on the court.

Sisseton enters the matchup with losses to Hamlin and Sioux Falls Christian, but has proven it can hold its own against some of Class A’s most formidable foes. The Redmen earned a quality win late in the season against Florence-Henry to boost its resume.

Parkston struggled early in the season, beginning 5-4, but has since won 11 of its last 13 games. The Trojans have the firepower to compete with many of Class A’s best teams.

Both teams have wins over Chamberlain and losses against Sioux Falls Christian, but the teams split their matchups against Florence-Henry. Parkston lost to the Falcons by 21 at the Hanson Classic. Both teams last qualified for the state tournament in 2012.

Rapid City Christian (18-4) vs Miller (18-4), 6 p.m. MST in Philip

Two teams with the same record will square off for a state tournament berth in Philip.

Three of Rapid City Christian’s four losses have come against teams in the SoDak 16. The Comets have dropped games against Red Cloud, St. Thomas More, and Lakota Tech, while also defeating Red Cloud this season. University of South Dakota commit Olivia Kieffer will be a player to keep your eyes on for the Comets. Christian’s only trip to the state tournament came in 1996.

Miller has won its last six games and looks to continue the success it has seen in girls’ athletics this year. The Rustlers placed fourth in the Class A volleyball tournament this past fall, and several of those players are leading the Rustler basketball as well. Miller has five seniors that would desperately like a shot at another state tournament appearance this year. The Rustlers are looking to qualify for their first state tournament appearance since finishing fourth in 2012.

This has the potential to be an entertaining game, no matter who comes out of top.
