MENNO – Hamlin’s Gracelyn Leiseth set a new state record in the discus, and other athletes from Deuel, Hamlin, Hitchcock-Tulare, Northwestern and Webster grabbed first places finishes or were runner-up during the Menno Relays track and field meet on Thursday.
Leiseth, who already owns the state mark in the shot put, threw the discus 171-feet 8-inches to eclipse the previous state record of 165-11 set by Kellen Kortemeyer of Custer in 2022. Leiseth, who will be competing at the University of Florida next season, also won the shot put during the meet.
Kami Wadsworth of Hamlin was second in both the shot put and discus.
Northwestern’s Ella Boekelheide won both the 800-meter and 1,600-meter runs, with Avery Miles of Hitchcock-Tulare second in the 800 and third in the 1,600.
The Webster sprint medley relay squad also topped the competition. Members included Jersey Johnson, Payton Snell, Erin Case and Ella Hegg.
Webster’s Erin Case was second in the pole vault, and Ella Haven of Northwestern was second in the triple jump.
On the boys’ side TJ Salmen of Hitchcock-Tulare won the 300-meter intermediate hurdles and was second in the 110-meter high hurdles.
Deuel’s Ricky Berndt won the 1,600-meter run, and Kaden St. Pierre of Hamlin won the discus.
Hamlin’s quartet of Rylan Thue, Gavin Prouty, Zac VanMeeteren and Luke Fraser won both the 400-meter relay and 800-meter relay.
Gavin Witt of Webster was runner-up in the 200-meter dash, Hitchcock-Tulare’s Landon Puffer was second in the long jump, and Webster’s Jacob Keller was second in the triple jump.
