HURON – Aberdeen Central placed three golfers in the top ten, including medalist Olivia Braun and runner-up Emma Dohrer, en route to a tie for first at the Huron Invitational Thursday at Broadland Creek Golf Course in Huron.

Braun carded a round of 74 to edge Dohrer by one stroke for those medalist honors. The pair, both freshmen, was joined in the top ten by Kyley Wirebaugh, who tied for eighth with an 87.

“We had a couple freshmen that really stepped up big time today,” said Central coach Kim Zimmerman. “For Emma, that was a career-low score for her, if I’m not mistaken. … And Olivia has been very consistent for us from the start.”

The top trio paced the Golden Eagles to a team score of 325, which tied Mitchell for the top spot in the 5-team tournament. Leah Gough carded an 89, while Chloe Vikander, Grace Schwan and Morgan Jones all recorded a 91 to round out Central’s scoring contingent.

“On any given day, it’s who’s going to put the low scores together?” ZImmerman said of the season-long battle with Mitchell.

The Golden Eagles picked up Thursday’s tournament in lieu of their own invitational being canceled, and Zimmerman said Huron was gracious enough to both host another tournament and invite Central’s regular attendees.

Now, the Golden Eagles will head back to Broadland Creek next Thursday for Huron’s regularly-scheduled invite, kicking off a stretch of three tournaments in five days, including back-to-back tournaments as Central heads to Yankton next Friday.

Team Points: 1, (tie), Aberdeen Central, 325, and Mitchell, 325; 3, Pierre, 361; 4, Brookings, 446; 5, Huron, no team score.
