MITCHELL – The Aberdeen Central boys’ tennis squad dropped a pair of 7-2 decisions to Mitchell and Sioux Falls Washington Monday afternoon in Mitchell, kicking off a week of action that will see the Golden Eagles take the court in five out of six days.

Central started its day with a string of narrow losses to the host Kernels, dropping two super tiebreaks in singles play and a close match in doubles action.

“I thought we played really well, especially against Mitchell,” said Central coach Trent Kurtz.

Mitchell Hofer had the lone singles win against the Kernels, taking care of business against Luke Jerke to begin the day.

“Mitch Hofer played the best match I’ve ever seen him play,” Kurtz said. “He just came out and took it to his opponent. He played with more pace than he usually does.”

Central’s Sekou Gogue at flight three and Jack Riggs at flight four lost in the super tiebreak in their respective matches. That, combined with the pair’s 7-5, 7-5 loss at second-flight doubles, proved to be the difference in the final score.

“We had all kinds of chances,” Kurtz said. “Mitchell has been at the top of the ESD the last eight to 10 years, so any time you can play them close, it’s good.”

Central then took the court against Washington, picking up wins at flights five and six singles.

“(Washington is) as good a team as there is out there,” Kurtz said. “Our top guys had some difficult matches. They played well. The score might not show it, but they played well.”

Preston Kreber (flight five) and Hunter Miller (flight six) each won their singles matches in similar fashion, taking a commanding first set victory, and fighting through a close second set.

Kurtz said as the weather warms and the team can get more practice time and match time in, some of those close matches might have different outcomes.

“Wednesday was our first day of outside practice,” he said. “I think our guys are going to get better and better the more outdoor practice we get.”

Central will host Sioux Falls Jefferson and Sioux Falls Roosevelt today at the Holgate Courts.
