MITCHELL – Aberdeen Central took a small group of boys’ track and field athletes to the Mitchell Relays on Monday, but they turned in some big performances.

The Golden Eagles’ 1,600-meter relay team almost set a school record and Central runners finished first and second in the 400-meter dash.

“Our next two meets are scheduled to be pretty windy. We wanted to go get some of our top quarter milers some times,” said Central boys’ coach Greg Murley. “We wanted to run a good 4×4, just not knowing what we were going to get in the next couple of weeks before Howard Wood.”

Drew Salfrank won the 400 with teammate Carter Dingman second.

“He and Carter kind of have owned that race,” Murley said.

Those two joined Aiden Heimann and Gabe Johnson to clock a 3:24.87 in the 4×4, which was good for second place and only one half second off the school record, which was set in the final meet of the season last spring.

“We feel pretty good about how we ran,” Murley said.

The 800-meter relay squad which featured Salfrank, Dingman, Heimann and Avery Ligon also finished second.

“Our 4×2 handoffs weren’t very good,” Murley said, “but once again you learn by mistakes, too.”

Heimann finished fourth in the 200-meter dash and Ligon was fifth.

Central also had a few throwers at the meet.

The Golden Eagles will compete at a meet in Brookings today.

Faulkton’s Daniel Stoll finished second in the 100-meter dash and third in the 200. Roman DiMaria was fourth in the 400. They both ran on a sprint medley relay team that took third.

Jaymi Senn of Faulkton was fourth in the shot put.
