EUREKA – The Ipswich boys and Faulkton girls grabbed team championships at the nine-hole Eureka Kuchen Classic golf tournament on Saturday. Ipswich edged Edmunds Central by a single stroke, while Faulkton finished a dozen strokes better than the rest of the girls’ field.
Faulkton’s Gabby Kast shot a 47 to earn medalist honors in a tight pack atop the girls’ division that featured just two strokes separating the top four players.
The boys’ individual play was even closer with Tray Hettick of Selby Area shooting a 41 to grab the top spot. A pair of players were one stroke back and four others were two strokes behind.
The event marked the first competition for Aberdeen Christian, which was led by Malek Wieker who shot a 51. Ethan Russell fired a 54, Abe Holscher carded a 56 and Josh Schaunaman finished with a 60.
“All of the guys played great given the recent weather and circumstances,” said Knights coach Tyler Pridey. “It was a nice practice round for all of them in a way to get them ready for actual competitive golf play coming up in May.”
Christian will return to action on Thursday when the Lake Region Conference tournament takes place at 10 a.m. at Rolling Hills Golf Club in Aberdeen.
