The Ipswich Tigers won 12 events at the Cavalier Relays indoor track and field meet at the Barnett Center on Friday.
On the boys’ side, Ipswich’s Tyler Hettich won two events, capturing wins in the high jump and 55-meter dash. Hettich recorded a leap of 6-feet, 2-inches, which was a personal best.
“Today my legs felt really well,” Hettich said. “I just had the bounce. I guess it was just a good day, and then right after that I ran the 55 and just happened to win it.”
As soon as he won the high jump, Hettich carried his momentum into the next event, immediately running over to the starting line to participate in the 55-meter dash, winning with a time of :6.87.
“I had so much adrenaline. My legs were shaking, and I think that’s why I won the 55,” Hettich said.
Hettich was also a part of the Tigers 960-meter sprint medley team that placed first with a time of 3:04.31.
“(The) medley went well, I guess,” Hettich said. “(We) had good handoffs (and) we had a good 800 runner, so we managed to win that one.”
The Tigers also took home boys’ wins in the 800-meter run (Maxwell Kulesa), 55-meter hurdles (Carter Geditz), pole vault (Darrel Yost), and shot put (Lucas Rowland).
Aberdeen Roncalli’s Jayden Munroe won the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 1 inch, and although it was not his best performance, Munroe was pleased with the outcome.
“It wasn’t my best performance. I couldn’t really get my mark down,” Munroe said. “I was jumping behind the board a lot, but I still won so I’m happy about that.”

Roncalli also took second in the 4×400-meter relay, losing to Groton by just less than two seconds. Munroe made a valiant attempt to rally his team to victory, running toe-to-toe with Groton’s Cole Simon, but came up just short in a thrilling race to end the meet.
“My teammates did a good job of keeping us in the race,” Munroe said. “I kind of had to close the gap a little bit, but I kept trying to overtake him on the curves. (It) probably took too much energy out of me, but I’ll try to get him next time.”
Groton won the 4×400-meter relay with a time of 3:49.28, while Roncalli finished in a time 3:51.21. Groton also won the 4×160-meter relay, while the Tigers’ Tristin McGannon won the 1,600-meter run.
Other boys’ victories included Aberdeen Christian’s Abe Kretchman winning the 200-meter dash and the triple jump, while Warner’s Logan Permann winning the 400-meter dash.
On the girls’ side, Ipswich’s Marley Guthmiller won two events. Guthmiller won the 55-meter hurdles and tied for first in the pole vault with teammate Quincy Olivier with a leap of eight feet. Gracie Lange also won two events for the Tigers, including the high jump and the long jump. The Ipswich 960-meter sprint medley team won first place with a time 3:41.46.

Aberdeen Christian freshman Shawnteah La Croix won the 55-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. La Croix was both nervous and confident going into both races.
“So, for the 55, when I was getting ready for my blocks and stuff, I was obviously pretty confident. I haven’t really been doing good with blocks lately, but then I’m getting better and more confident in that,” La Croix said. “For the 200, honestly, this is my second 200 of the year, so I was really nervous, and I didn’t run my best time.”

Other girls’ victories included Aberdeen Roncalli’s Maddie Huber in the triple jump, Warner’s MaKenna Leidholt in the 400-meter dash, and Warner’s Kennadee Wiedebush in the 1,600-meter run. Groton captured four events, winning the 4×160-meter relay and the 4×400-meter relay. Individually, Groton’s Taryn Traphagen won the 800-meter run, while Emma Kutter won the shot put.
Aberdeen Christian coach Sam Bjorkman was pleased with how the meet went for his team.
“It was a good meet,” Bjorkman said. “Since this is our third meet here, you kind of have a good idea of where you’ve been at. The kids need the competition to keep it fresh and, I think, to keep it fun. (I’m) just glad that we could compete somewhere.”
Although the meet gave the high school athletes a chance to compete, it also gave the junior high athletes a chance to get out and compete, something Bjorkman was thankful for.
“I’m really glad the junior high kids could compete,” Bjorkman said. “They’ve been working for quite a while, so I think for them to get out and have the experience and get some exposure and get the deer in the headlights look out, that’s good.”
Roncalli coach Brady Lesnar was also impressed with how his team competed.
“I thought my pole vaulters did really good. I thought my high jumpers did well. Beau (Price) got second in the pole vault. I had a junior high kid that did pretty well and competed with the high school kids, both on the boys and the girls, and so that’s always fun to see,” Lesnar said.
Lesnar noted that several kids tried some different events, which gave them some new perspectives that they may not have seen before.
“Some kids did some different events and they may have found some things that they might’ve liked that they didn’t think that they would’ve liked had they not done it, so that’s always fun to see,” Lesnar said. “We might’ve found some sprinters, we might’ve found some distance kids, so that’s a good thing about a meet like today though. You give kids opportunities and you maybe discover something.”
Lesnar said there were many that appreciated the junior high aspect of the meet, and he says keeping that aspect for the coming years is something worth thinking about.
“Every year is different,” Lesnar said. “I think that’s something that we would consider if we decide to do this meet again. This is kind of a throw together, unsanctioned meet, just let the kids get on the track kind of thing. Hopefully it’s warmer next year.”
