A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of April 2-8:

Last year on April 2, 2022: A sold-out Frost Arena (5,263 fans) watched the Jackrabbits crush Seton Hall 82-50 in the WNIT championship game. Reserve Kallie Theisen and Aberdeen native Paiton Burckhard combined for 29 points and 17 rebounds to lead the Jacks who jumped out to a 40-18 halftime lead. WNIT MVP Myah Selland (Letcher) of SDSU had 98 points, 53 rebounds, 23 assists and 13 steals in the six tourney games. Teammate and fellow all-WNIT Tournament performer Haleigh Timmer (Rapid City) added 100 points and 30 rebounds in the event.

10 years ago on April 3, 2013: Continued poor weather conditions in northeast South Dakota forced the Swisher Field football complex into hosting a new sport on its turf, college softball.

20 years ago on April 6, 2003: Courtney Grimsrud of Sisseton and Laura Legge of Aberdeen Central were named two of the best five girls’ basketball players in South Dakota by being named to the Argus Leader’s First Five team. Grimsrud, a junior, averaged 19.6 points and 12.3 rebounds and has led Sisseton to two state titles and a runner-up finish. Legge, a senior, led the Golden Eagles to a State AA runner-up finish this season by averaging 15.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game.

30 years ago on April 4, 1993: Eric Kline led the 20th annual Argus Leader First Five college edition. Kline, a sophomore at NSU, led coach Bob Olson’s Wolves to a 34-2 season and a national runner-up spot in the NAIA DII tourney. Kline, also an All-American selection, scored 30 or more points 11 times during the season, including a 48- point effort that tied the school record set by Jim Schlekeway in 1967.

40 years ago on April 8, 1983: NSU pitcher Rory McKittrick of Groton threw a three-hitter as the Wolves defeated the Bemidji State baseball team 3-0.

50 years ago on April 6, 1973: The South Dakota boys’ basketball coaches voted down four suggested rule changes including a shot clock, three-point field goals and raising the baskets. The other rule change dismissed was giving players who had not fouled out one extra foul if a game went into overtime.
