A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of April 9-15:

Last year on April 9, 2022: The Denver Pioneers defeated Minnesota State-Mankato 5-1 to win the NCAA DI Hockey National Championship in Boston. Three former Aberdeen Wings (all 2016-17 alumni) played in the game: Kyle Mayhew of Denver, and Mankato’s Andy Carroll and Nathan Smith. Mayhew is a California native who played 10 games for the Wings that season. Carroll is a Minnesota native who played in 67 games with the Wings in the 2016-17 season and earned several post-season honors. Smith is a Florida native who played four games with the Wings in the 2016-17 season, scoring a game-winning goal against Brookings in his first weekend with the Wings on Jan. 1, 2017. South Dakota colleges know Denver and Mankato well. In most sports, the Pioneers are members of the Summit League while the Mavericks are members of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

10 years ago on April 15, 2013: Yankton native and former USD runner Matt Dewald placed 20th (2:19.35) in the Boston Marathon, one of the highest finishes ever for a South Dakotan. About two hours later with more than 5,500 runners still on the course, two bombs were set off by criminals near the finish line. Three were killed, more than 250 injured and the race was halted.

20 years ago on April 13, 2003: Kyle Schwan of Aberdeen Roncalli was selected as one of the five best boys’ basketball players in South Dakota as he was named to the Argus Leader’s First Five team. The senior averaged 23 points, five rebounds, four assists and 2.6 steals a game. Waubay junior Derrick McCauley (25.1 points, 7.4 rebounds, 7.6 assists, 5.2 steals) was named to the second team.

30 years ago on April 11, 1993: Leaders in the state women’s bowling tourney at Eastway Lanes in Sioux Falls include Sandy Vig (handicap and scratch singles) of Sisseton and Judy Lloyd (scratch game) of Hecla. The tourney runs through May 2.

40 years ago on April 9, 1983: After six seasons as the NSU women’s basketball coach, Curt Fredrickson has resigned to go into private business. Fredrickson, whose teams went 145-23, and a friend are starting a fast-food business in Aberdeen.

50 years ago on April 14, 1973: The South Dakota American Legion reports that 125 Class A and B varsity Legion baseball teams will compete across the state this season.
