A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of April 23-29:

Last year on April 28, 2022: Aberdeen Central senior Josh Martin won the 800 meters in 1:56.72 at the Al Sahli meet on his home track. It broke the school record of 1:57.74 set by Guy Thornton in 1995.

10 years ago on April 26, 2013: There was a high school tennis tourney being played in 65-degree weather in Rapid City surrounded by hills of fast-melting snow outside of the courts.

20 years ago on April 19, 2003: Jerry Ochs of Aberdeen won a couple of senior divisions at the State Powerlifting Championships in Sioux Falls.

30 years ago on April 27, 1993: Flandreau native and Alaskan Iditarod musher Vern Halter is back in South Dakota visiting relatives and schools. Halter, who is a lawyer and dog kennel operator, is a graduate of the USD School of Law. He has finished the 1,100-mile Iditarod five times, including this yearโ€™s race where Halter was 11th out of 68 mushers.

40 years ago on April 23, 1983: About 500 horses were at the Fort Pierre track set to kick off the 1983 pari-mutuel racing season in South Dakota. Typically from April-September, the races start in Fort Pierre, move to Aberdeen, then Rapid City and end up at Park Jefferson. However, Park Jefferson recently closed so the races will be extended through July in Rapid City.

50 years ago on April 29, 1973: Eureka born and Aberdeen raised Marlene Bauer Hagge graced the cover of Golf Digest May 1973 edition. At the time, the LPGA star had been on tour 23 years and had won more than $250,000 in career earnings. Hagge, who founded the LPGA with her sister Alice Bauer and 11 other women in 1950, played on the tour until 1997, winning 26 tournaments including the 1956 LPGA championship.
