PIERRE – The Aberdeen Roncalli track and field squads jumped into summer for a day and returned home with four school records from the Bob Judson Invitational Tuesday in Pierre.
As temperatures in the capital city soared past 90 degrees, Cavalier senior Jayden Munroe launched himself into Roncalli lore with a pair of school records in the long and triple jumps, while Michael Luu and Anna Mitzel hold the top spot in the javelin throw after the inaugural competing of that event.
“It was just good to have a meet outside and be out in the warm weather,” said Roncalli coach Brady Lesnar. “(Monday) we had practice and it was about 55 degrees out and the kids were complaining it was too warm out. Today was a little shock to the system.”
The warm day did little to slow down Munroe, however, who set two new records, anchored Roncalli’s 4×200-meter relay squad to victory and came up just shy in the 200-meter dash, finishing second.
“That’s always a good day,” Lesnar said.
Munroe’s long jump mark of 22 feet, 5 inches bested the old Cavalier record by 10 ½ inches, Lesnar said, while his triple jump mark of 44 feet, 3 inches had the important distinction of being set outdoors, as opposed to a record he eclipsed indoors last month.
“It counts,” Lesnar said.
Luu and Mitzel earned their place in the record books, albeit on a temporary basis, by being the top finisher in the boys’ and girls’ javelin, respectively. This is the first year that Class A programs compete in the event.
Luu’s mark of 79 feet, 4 inches earned him 10th place on the boys’ side, while Mitzel’s final mark of 68 feet, 5 inches put her in seventh place in the girls’ division.
“They are currently the record holders,” Lesnar said. “That might change in a week or two after we have another meet.”

Other members of Roncalli’s winning 800 relay squad were Kaden Larson, Caden Shelton and Parker Grieben. Roncalli’s Maddie Huber was second in the triple jump.
Other area athletes also had a big day.
Frederick’s John Bretsch won the 400-meter dash and also ran the anchor leg on the winning 3,200-meter relay squad. Teammates included Winston Clark, Brayden Sumption and Stephen Achen.

Carter Luikens of Potter County, who was second in the 400, won the 800-meter run with teammate Nicholas Schlachter second.
On the girls’ side, Potter County’s Emma Schlachter won the 800-meter run with Frederick’s Morgan Sumption second. Schlachter also ran on the winning 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter relay squads. Other members on both of those teams were Rayel Persoon, Jadyn Ahlemeier and Dannika Kaup. Kaup was second in the 400-meter dash.
Lesnar said overall he was pleased with his team’s performances in its first outdoor competition of the season, even more considering the drastic change in conditions, adding that the coaching staff had been reminding athletes since last week to be prepared.
“Right before we were getting ready, we had a little team meeting,” Lesnar said. “I told them, one thing we’re not going to do today is complain about the heat. We’ve been in the cold long enough.”
Roncalli will return to indoor competition briefly this Friday, as the Cavaliers will host a meet at the Barnett Center, but Lesnar said his team is looking forward to more outdoor meets as spring continues to find a foothold.
“Just looking forward to kids dropping their times,” he said.
Friday’s meet is set to begin at 10 a.m. with the field events. Running events will start at 11:15 a.m.
