REDFIELD – The Redfield Muskrats made good use of the big inning en route to a pair of lopsided high school baseball victories Saturday afternoon. The Muskrats opened with a 14-1 win over Hamlin, then closed the day with a 22-8 victory over Wolsey-Wessington. Both contests ended after five innings.
Redfield did all its damage in the first three innings against Hamlin, including a 10-run second inning. Keaton Rohlfs had two hits and a stolen base in that inning, including a 2-run double early. Erik Salmen also muscled out a triple in that offensive outburst, which pushed Redfield’s lead from a 3-1 count to a 13-1 advantage, effectively putting the game out of reach.
Salmen never slowed down in game two, exploding for seven runs batted in, four runs scored and two homers in two official at bats, as Redfield was in control from nearly the first pitch.
Salmen followed a solo home run in the first with a grand slam in the second, accounting for all four of the Muskrats’ runs in that frame.
He was also hit by a pitch in the third as Redfield plated 13 runs to turn a 7-0 lead into a 20-run lead.
Wolsey-Wessington, for its part, didn’t go quietly, responding to Redfield’s third inning with their own fourth inning. The Outlaws scored seven of their eight runs in that fourth inning, but the hole was too deep and time too short. Ashton Hill, Peyton Rainford, Blaze Herdman, Gunner Brueggeman, Keegan Haider, and Carson Stephenson each drove in runs during the frame.
Redfield finished the day with 24 total hits over the course of the two games. Rohlfs, Seth Siebrecht and Elliott Komraus had four hits apiece. Rohlfs and Siebrecht had a pair of extra-base hits apiece, while Salmen had three.
Nolan Gall picked up the win in game one, going four innings and allowing just one unearned run. Rohlfs, in addition to his plate presence, went three and a third innings on the mound in game two to earn the win.
