BRANDON – The Aberdeen Central track and field team won six events at the Eastern South Dakota Conference track and field meet on Saturday.

Both the girls and boys and teams finished in third place in team points, with the Central girls totaling 120 points, while the boys tallied 104 points. Brandon Valley swept the team titles.

On the boys’ side, Central won four events, including three individual events. Drew Salfrank won the 400-meter dash with a time of :50.04, while Aiden Heimann earned the title in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles with a time of :39.97.

Central boys’ coach Greg Murley said Heimann won the event after a rough start to the day.

“He was a little frustrated after not having a great 110 hurdles and he was able to rally back,” Murley said.

The third individual win came from Tyler Bain, who won the high jump with a leap of 6-feet, beating out teammate Brendan Phillips, who finished second also with a leap of 6-feet.

Murley said he was impressed with the results in the high jump.

“Probably the event of the day for both teams was the high jump,” Murley said. “Tyler jumped really well and Brendan Phillips really had a good day too.”

The Golden Eagle boys also won the 1,600-meter relay with a time of 3:26.39, while also finishing second in the 800-meter relay (1:29.73).

On the girls’ side, the Golden Eagles picked up wins from Grace Kuch in the discus (120-feet, 10-inches) and Regan Lust in the high jump (5 feet, 2 inches). Teammates Ciara Frank and Madison Hochstetter placed second and third, respectively in the high jump.

Central girls’ coach Jim Appl was pleased to see the high jumpers perform well.

“Anytime you can come away with a one, two, three to really get the ball rolling is about as good a start as you’re gonna get going there,” Appl said.

Kuch also placed second in the javelin, while Frank added another second-place finish in the long jump. Taryn Hermansen placed second in the shot put, while the Golden Eagle girls also placed second in the 400-meter relay and third in the 800-meter relay.

Appl was happy with how well the girls fared in the field events.

“We just performed incredibly on our field events side,” Appl said. “That’s a tribute to the kids, and the coaches there putting the kids in a position to succeed.”

Both coaches said that around half of the Central athletes posted personal bests, and that will be key as the teams move forward.

“This is going to be a down week. I don’t think either team is going to be pumped about the (Mark Wendelgass Relays) or the field event meet on Tuesday,” Murley said. “We want our kids to compete, but it’s gonna be a little bit more low key, both meets will be for us. We’ll look at the weather and see if we can focus on one thing or two things.”

Aberdeen Central will host a field event meet at Swisher Field on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
