Central blanks Roncalli, Milbank Area in final home action

The Aberdeen Central tennis team could not have scripted a more ideal conclusion to its home tennis slate on Tuesday.

The Golden Eagles took advantage of solid weather conditions and did not drop a single match on the way to 9-0 wins over Aberdeen Roncalli and Milbank Area on Senior Day at the Holgate Courts.

“We could have not have asked for a better day,” said Central coach Trent Kurtz. “The weather, had a great Senior Day, kind of sent those seniors out on the right foot.”

Central started out with a sweep over the Cavaliers.

“Some really good wins in that to get started and then carried it over to the Milbank match and good wins there, too,” Kurtz said, “so we played really well.”

The Roncalli dual featured a rematch of four singles matches that took place last Saturday at a tourney in Rapid City. While Central won three of those four, the Eagles grabbed them all this time as AJ Prehn gained a measure of revenge against Palmer Johnson at flight two.

“Big win for AJ,” Kurtz said. “Palmer has kind of had his number here the last couple of years.”

Hunter Miller also scored an impressive straight-set win over Jacob Bellefeuille after a tight contest last weekend.

“I wasn’t really paying attention,” Kurtz said, “and every time he flipped the score he got two games, two games, two games.”

There were two matches that went to super breakers. Sekou Gogue edged Gannon May at flight three singles and the doubles team of Preston Kreber and Sam Capser edged Bellefeuille and Jayden Reecy at flight three.

The Roncalli duo overcame a tough opening set and won the second set to force the breaker, but came up short.

“We dropped the first set 1-6. We were just kind of playing catchup a lot,” Bellefeuille said. “Then we kind of figured it out for the second set. We won 6-3. We just weren’t able to close it out in the tiebreaker.”

Central went on to win all of its matches against Milbank to cap the day.

“Guys did a good job, kind of jumped on them early,” Kurtz said. “We played 10 games there, so when you play 10 games, the start is incredibly important.”

The duals were the final home action for six Central seniors.

“They’re a really fun group,” Kurtz said, “and they all get along so well.”

Nowhere is that more evident than at flight two doubles where seniors Gogue and Jack Riggs enjoy being each other’s partner. The duo played soccer for the Golden Eagles and make a natural tandem in doubles.

“It’s so much more fun to play with my friend Sekou,” Riggs said. “He’s such a great friend. I just love playing with him. He’s great.”

Riggs is gearing up for next week’s Eastern South Dakota Conference tournament on Tuesday in Mitchell. He believes he has an opportunity to make a big impact.

“I really think I have a strong chance of placing top three for ESD, at least top three,” Riggs said. “I think I can do really well there with my flight.”

The Central-Roncalli dual definitely featured a unique atmosphere as both schools were well represented among the larger than normal gallery.

“It’s nice having all your family here being able to watch,” Bellefeuille said. “They can’t always travel to Rapid or Pierre to come watch you in the middle of the week.”

Roncalli coach Paige Hermanson said her players just need to have confidence when it comes to competing against larger schools.

“It’s always kind of a challenge on getting them to reframe their mindset on getting beat by big schools,” Hermanson said.

The Cavaliers will not have much time for reflection as they head to Pierre for a tournament on Thursday and Friday.

“We’re headed there for two big days of tennis,” Hermanson said. “Good competition, new competition, hopefully, some more (Class) A schools to play.”

Central is scheduled to play in the Brookings quadrangular on Saturday where the Eagles will see Brookings and Yankton for the first time this season.

While the results of the matches are well documented each season, it’s the memories that will last forever for the graduating seniors.

When asked what he will remember most about his days at Central, Riggs responded, “Probably just tennis trips with my friends.”

Bellefeuille, who also wrestled for Central in addition to playing tennis for Roncalli, echoed the same sentiment.

“I think it’s just the memories that you make with your friends,” he said. “It’s something you’re never really going to forget. You’ll never get the days back.”
