DELL RAPIDS – The Aberdeen Roncalli golf team posted a ninth-place finish at the Quarrier Girls’ Invitational on Tuesday.

The Cavaliers finished with a team score of 136, led by Claire Crawford who finished in fourth place with a round of 88.

“The best part about Claire was that she knew that she was playing well, but she didn’t know how well she was playing,” said Roncalli coach Jon Murdy. “Conditions were tough, and so that’s what is great about Claire is she really plays golf one hole at a time.”

Grace Seyer finished with a 103, while Ava Danielson had a total of 110. Morgan Helms followed with a 119, while Reese Henrich rounded out the Cavalier golfers with a score of 123.

Murdy said while the team did not have the best beginning, each girl persevered to the end of the meet.

“Not all of our players had the greatest of starts. Nobody has really played that golf course before, and Dell Rapids golf course, Rocky Run, is one of those golf courses that can kind of eat you alive if you let it,” Murdy said. “With all of the girls having a not-so-great of a start, they all played great to finish it out.”

Murdy was also pleased with how each golfer handled the course, despite being in unfamiliar territory.

“Just really proud of all of them,” Murdy said. “They hung in there as best they could, throughout the wind and throughout the cold, and by the end of it they were all enjoying the day.”

Murdy hopes the Cavaliers can continue the momentum they have built so far this season when Roncalli hosts its annual invitational Thursday at Lee Park.

“Hopefully on Thursday we’ll have nice weather for them over at Lee Park to where they can keep building off of what they’ve been doing.”
