HURON – It was Aberdeen Central’s day as the Golden Eagles came away with both the team and individual golf titles at the Huron Invitational on Thursday.

The Golden Eagles won the team title with a score of 319, finishing ahead of Rapid City Stevens (332) and Mitchell (335). Central coach Kim Zimmerman was pleased with his team’s performance.

“Anytime you play the way we did today that’s always a lot of fun,” Zimmerman said. “We always encourage the girls to go out and have fun, and that’s the way you do it, by playing well as a team and we had some good individual performances today.”

Individually, Central’s Emma Dohrer captured the title with a score of 73, edging out Rapid City Stevens’ Tanna Phares (75). Zimmerman noted that Dohrer’s score was a career best for her.

“She had her career best about a week ago and now she tops that by a couple of strokes, so it’s like it just keeps getting better,” Zimmerman said. “I am very proud of her and what she accomplished today.”

Two other Central golfers placed in the top 10, with Olivia Braun (80) and Kyley Wirebaugh (81) finishing in sixth and seventh place, respectively.

Zimmerman was also happy with their efforts, and said it was nice to see the scores from each individual.

“(I’m) very happy for the girls. Their hard work, their time, their efforts paying off right now, so that’s what it’s all about,” Zimmerman said. “You’re kind of reaping the benefits and the rewards right now. It’s good to get out and play and do well.”

Other Central golfers included Morgan Jones (85) tying for 12th place, Chloe Vikander (87) tying for 21, Leah Gough (88) and Grace Schwan (99).

“It’s nice to get four scores in the 80’s and maybe creep one or two in the 70’s, which is where we were at today, and I think it was evident by our team score in comparison to where the second and the third team ended up,” Zimmerman said.

The Golden Eagles will venture further south to play in Yankton today for the Yankton Invitational, which begins at 9 a.m., and Zimmerman hopes to continue the momentum.

“We’d just like to build on what we started and what we accomplished today,” Zimmerman said. “It’s a different golf course, maybe different weather conditions. Hopefully, those girls that didn’t play as well today rebound and come back tomorrow and the ones that played well today want to keep that momentum going.”
