Individual success translated into team championships during the Lake Region Conference golf tournament Thursday at Rolling Hills Golf Course.

Jace Konsor of Ipswich won the boys’ title to help lead the Tigers to first place in the team standings, while Faulkton’s Gabby Kast was the girls’ medalist to help power the Trojans to the team crown.

The LRC title was the second in a row for Kast. The senior played better as the day wore on.

“I had a few bad holes on the back nine,” Kast said. “I went in the water a couple of times, but I learned from my mistakes the second nine and didn’t go in the water at all.”

Kast golfed with the lead group so she knew where she was at in the individual standings. That still did not help ease the stress, however. When asked if she gets nervous, Kast responded, “All the time, but I just pretend I don’t.”

She said a solid hole usually eases the tension.

“When you get a good hole in, then you feel the pressure slowly taken off of you,” Kast said.

Kast said that her scores have improved dramatically in the past year. That does not happen by accident.

“Obviously, you have to be in the right mindset, because if you’re not in the right mindset you’re not going to play good,” Kast said, “but also at the same time I’m out hitting 20-30 drives a night just to be better at that.”

Konsor played steady on the way to his championship.

“I just stayed consistent on the back nine, which really helped,” Konsor said.

Konsor was in a comfort zone because of the group that he was paired with.

“Thankfully I was with a good group that I knew,” Konsor said, “so that definitely helps a lot. I just step up and hit a good shot.”

The junior had nearly identical totals on his first nine holes compared to his last nine.

“I tried to hit greens in regulation,” Konsor said.

Konsor led a strong delegation of teammates during the tourney. He said the Tigers help to make each other better.

“It gets pretty tight between the three of us,” Konsor said.

Aberdeen Christian finished third in team points. It’s been a bit since the Knights have been able to record a team score.

“It’s nice to have a lot more kids on the team this year,” said Christian coach Tyler Pridey. “All of them are super athletic, basically the whole basketball team came over.”

One of those individuals is Abe Holscher who finished 10th to lead the squad. Holscher decided to come out for golf his senior season.

“I’ve just been playing for fun for the past couple of years,” Holscher said.

He said he came out because his friends also decided to play this season.

Holscher finished with a total of 97.

“It’s just all mental,” Holscher said. “I didn’t shoot as well as I’d like, but nothing to hang my head on, I guess.”

Holscher’s score was a bit deceiving because of a couple of rough holes to finish off his round.

“The front nine I got 46,” Holscher said. “I was starting off pretty well on the back and then I just kind of blew up the last few holes and got two 7s in a row.”

Pridey said golf is a difficult sport to jump into without having much background in it.

“Golf is really hard and you can’t expect too much out of them,” Pridey said of his inexperienced golfers. “Honestly, I just want them to be on the team and have fun, get out and play.”

That said, Pridey is hoping that his crew can improve in the next couple of weeks in order to make a strong run at qualifying for this year’s state tournament.

“I would like to see the kids get a chance – obviously they will at regions – to qualify for state. It’s been on their minds,” Pridey said. “Whether they’re serious about it or not, I would like to see them attempt to that, because it’s a great experience and they’ll never forget it.”

While technique is key in the sport of golf, so it the right mindset and Pridey doesn’t have to worry about whether his golfers will compete when they’re out on the course.

“They’re uber competitive, but that helps with the advancement of playing golf,” Pridey said. “If you get angry at a shot or you hate how you’re playing, often times the response is to go practice which is exactly what you have to do.”

The Knights are at a tournament in Huron on Tuesday before competing in another at Watertown on Thursday.
