A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of May 21-27:

Last year on May 26, 2022: Northern State senior Tanner Berg of Watertown won the hammer throw at the NCAA DII national championships in Michigan. Berg’s winning toss measured 228 feet, 4.0 inches. He finished his career as a seven-time All-American. Berg is the seventh individual to win at least one national championship in NSU history: Doug Neuharth (wrestling), Dave Harvey (two in wrestling), Henry Schneider (track and field), Matt Meuleners (two in wrestling), Amanda Madden (two in track and field), and Hannah Kastigar (three in swimming).

10 years ago on May 23, 2013: Aberdeen-born Terry Francona, now manager of the Cleveland Indians, got a rousing standing ovation upon returning for the first time to Boston. In eight seasons as the Red Sox manager, Francona guided Boston to World Series titles in 2004 and 2007.

20 years ago on May 21, 2003: Kelli O’Keefe of Aberdeen Roncalli shot a 165 (81-84) to win by one stroke the Class B girls’ state golf tournament May 19-20 at the Lee Park Golf Course in Aberdeen. Jenna Buckwalter of Hamlin and Kayla Nielsen of Wakonda tied for second.

30 years ago on May 25, 1993: Bart Sime won the State B boys’ golf title by five strokes in Watertown as well as leading Britton to the team title.

40 years ago on May 24, 1983: Rapid City Stevens won the State A girls’ golf championship at Lee Park in Aberdeen. Helping the Raiders were RCS twin sisters Amy and Lori Rajewich as each shot a 93 on day one and a 91 on day two for a 184. Winning her third individual title was Kris Tschetter of Sioux Falls Washington, who won the championship by 22 strokes by shooting 149 for the 36 holes.

50 years ago on May 26, 1973: Coach Burt Elliott and his Aberdeen Central boys’ tennis team dominated the state tournament to win its second title in a row. The Golden Eagles scored 110 points compared to second-place Vermillion’s 63. Aberdeen sent all four of its players to the singles’ and double’s finals: Keith Levi was second in the first flight; Bruce Mannes won the second flight; Bruce Poe was second in the third flight; and Paul Richardson won the fourth flight. Levi and Mannes won the first flight doubles state title while Poe and Richardson won the second flight championship. Rain forced the tourney indoors to the Racquet Club in Sioux Falls where Sen. George McGovern was taking a tennis lesson. McGovern presented the championship trophy to the Golden Eagles.
