Looking Back

A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of May 28-June 3:

Last year on June 3, 2022: The Rohrbach name and Aberdeen Christian basketball continues its tradition. Matt Rohrbach will take over as head coach of the boys’ team for his brother David Rohrbach. David coached the Knights for seven years (111-46) and took them to the past two state tournaments, including a runner-up finish at the 2021 State B. His twin brother, Michael, was the head girls’ coach at Christian for a couple of seasons. All three Rohrbachs were standout players for the Knights.

10 years ago on May 29, 2013: Al Thelin of Rapid City made his fourth hole-in-one in 259 days, all at the Golf Club at Red Rock in Rapid City. They were the first aces of the 55-year-old’s 43-year golfing career.

20 years ago on June 1, 2003: Yankton native Jim Ahern shot a tournament record 196 over 54 holes to earn $210,000 and the Music City Championship in Nashville. He led from start-to-finish in the PGA Champions Tour event. This was Ahern’s third victory of his professional career.

30 years ago on May 28, 1993: Rapid City golfing partners Barry Schaller and Tom Mueller made back-to-back holes-in-one, the first aces at the new Elks Golf Course in their community. Schaller used a pitching wedge to ace the 122-yard, No. 16 hole and Mueller then used his pitching wedge to duplicate the feat. About the same time across town at the Rapid City Arrowhead Country Club, club pro Gary Metzger asked his playing partners if they ever saw a hole-in-one. When they replied no, Metzger told them (and the Rapid City Journal): “Well, keep your eyes on this one because it is going to go in.” And his 170-yard shot did just that.

40 years ago on May 28, 1983: The Groton boys repeated as the State A track champions behind three wins from meet MVP Jeff Kersting. He won the triple, long and high jumps. The Tigers also won the 800-meter relay (Paul Daley, Eric Larson, Dick Ragatz and Mike McLaughlin).

50 years ago on May 28, 1973: Thirteen records fell in the three divisions (men, men’s junior and women) at the 10 th annual SD AAU track championships in Aberdeen. Record-setters included Vera Schlosser of Cresbard (high jump), Angela Arendt of Highmore (100-meter hurdles), Ellen Scott of Northwestern (440-yard dash), Mark Neumann of Groton (high jump) and Aberdeen native George Amundson of Iowa State (discus). Amundson also won the high jump.
